About The Bread Basket
This bakery opened in 1977 when our Auntie Nelly and Uncle Sonny brought their recipes from the Philippines to Daly City. We three cousins—Hank, Leo, and Leno—all started the same way: as kids working at the family bakery in Guam in the '70s, '80s, and '90s.
Life took us in different directions after that. Hank became a Marine, then a freelance photographer with assignments for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and others. Leo moved to Sacramento, worked construction, became a contractor. Leno stayed in the bakery world, running our family's Modesto location for nearly 20 years. Different paths, but the bakery was always there in the background.
When Auntie Nelly told Hank's mom—her sister—that she was ready to retire in 2025, we had a decision to make. We're not kids anymore—late 50s, mid 50s, early 60s. Taking on a bakery at this stage? That's a big ask. But Auntie Nelly had helped us out when we needed it—loaning money years ago with nothing but "remember me when I'm old" as repayment terms. This was our chance to remember.
So here we are. Same recipes Auntie Nelly and Uncle Sonny brought over in '77. Same early mornings (ovens on by 5 AM). Same pandesal, ensymada, and bibingka. We've added a few things, updated where it made sense, and we're experimenting on Saturdays to see what the community wants. But the foundation stays the same.
If you've been coming here for decades, thanks for giving us a shot. If you're new, welcome—stop by early, try something, and let us know what you think.
